Jongdae hides how nervous he is with a grin, eyes sweeping past all the people seated before him. He takes another shaky breath and goes over his lines again.

“This isn’t a play,” Baekhyun hisses, jostling the man with his elbow, “you aren’t here to put on a face and deliver some fancy words.”

Jongdae sighs. “I know,” he says. And he does know. How could he not? He’s been preparing for this day for months, choosing the perfect tux and cake, spent gruelling hours writing invitations and sending them out, and lest he forget the sleepless nights where he’d stare at the ceiling, hoping and praying that this would be perfect.

Baekhyun scoffs. “Yeah, okay. Then loosen up a bit, will you?” He offers a small smile. “Enjoy this.”

Licking his lips, Jongdae nods. He squares his shoulders, takes a deep breath, and then the organ starts playing. The noise permeates throughout the room and everyone stands.

Someone appears in the aisle and smiles right at Jongdae.

--

“I’m going to ask her to marry me.”

Luhan chokes on his sandwich and gratefully accepts the glass of water, taking a gulp before speaking. “How long have you guys been going out for?”

Jongdae frowns, taking the glass back. “Four months. But time doesn’t mean anything! She’s the one, I know it. And… I got a ring already.”

“You’re hopeless,” Luhan mutters under his breath. Then, louder, “Alright, show me the money, you go-getter.”

At that, Jongdae grins. He’d never tell anyone, but he’s the happiest with Luhan. It’s as effortless as breathing, talking to the man. Ever since he’d had the elder as a tutor for Chinese, they’d stuck together. They meet up at least twice every week for lunch outings like these, even though Luhan’s busy with his job at the tv station (“You wouldn’t believe the amount of foundation and toner they have caked on their skin,” Luhan remarks when Jongdae inquires as to why they’d need a makeup artist whose skills lie in costume makeup), and Jongdae has his internship. They still have time for each other.

“Wow, Jongdae. This is really nice.” Luhan gives a low whistle, staring at the open case Jongdae had just handed him. “Must’ve been expensive.”

Jongdae shrugs. “I have a lot saved. So,” he pauses, twisting his fingers in his lap, “Do you think she’ll like it?”

Luhan keeps his eyes glued on the diamond ring, colorful gems intricately embedded into the band. He opens his mouth, thoughtful look on his face. Abruptly, he snaps the lid closed, hands the ring back to Jongdae, and smiles. “I think she’ll love it.”

Jongdae thanks his friend, lets him know he’ll be giving the ring to his girlfriend at dinner tonight, and he’ll call him with the story right after. Then he packs his things up and leaves.

Luhan slumps forward onto the table. “She’ll love it,” he murmurs to himself, “because I know I would.”

--

She’s waiting at the table when he gets there. Not even bothering to hide his smile, he sits down across from her, not noticing the way her gaze flickers away.

“I have something I want to say,” he says, trying to hide his eagerness.

The woman nods, still not meeting his eyes. “Me too.”

“Really?” Jongdae gapes, grinning when she nods. “Oh, then you go first.” He’ll wait to propose. He doesn’t want there to be anything left unsaid before he gets down on his knee and asks her to–

“I think we should break up.”

Jongdae feels like he’s been doused in cold water. His chest tightens. He tries to swallow, but just feels like he’s about to throw up. “W-why?”

“Jongdae,” she starts, eyes full of sympathy and hands reaching for Jongdae’s before she thinks better of it and pulls them back. “We’re just not right for each other. Can’t you feel it? When I think about you it’s not… passionate. I love you, but this isn’t right. I don’t want us both to be unhappy. Do you agree?”

The right feels like a thousand pound weight in his pocket. Jongdae nods.

She sighs in relief. “Great. Then, I’ll take my leave. I’ve already paid for dinner if you want to get anything, but I have a meeting in a few minutes.” She stands and flounders for a second, not knowing what she should do before finally patting Jongdae on the shoulder. “Text me when you get home so that I know you’ve made it back safely.”

She heads out the front door and the last thing Jongdae sees of her is her long hair flying freely behind her as she marches away. He loved her hair. Loved combing his fingers through it after a long day, loved seeing her tie it up in intricate buns and braids. Seems fitting to be the last thing he’d see of her.

He doesn’t stay, leaving minutes after she had. He drops the ring case into the first trash can he sees without a second thought.

When Luhan opens his door at midnight and sees Jongdae, holding ice cream, a movie, and wearing a miserable smile, he doesn’t even blink. Jongdae’s invited inside and, half an hour later, he has someone to hold him as tears run down his face and he wonders what he’s done wrong.

--

“What is the cause for this assembly?”

Jongin, head on the table, groans. “Chanyeol, it’s too early for big words.” Sehun nods in agreement.

“We are here,” Luhan begins, still waking up himself because it is seven in the morning and he’s outside, “because Jongdae has been sleeping on my couch all week after his girlfriend dumped him.”

Baekhyun gapes, looking up from his phone. “Wasn’t he about to pro–”

“Yeah,” Luhan mumbles, hand worming into his pocket where a small velvet box sits. “Yeah.”

“This is good though, right?” Minseok speaks up, tone slightly annoyed. He’d had to cancel something to make it to Luhan’s emergency meeting. His frustration is understandable, he’s never even met Jongdae. “You’ve been drooling over this guy for years now and he’s single. This is your chance.”

Minseok,” Luhan hisses, expression offended. “He’s hurting right now, how could I– why would I–no. He’s my best friend, Minseok,” he snaps.

Sehun bites his lip, looking back and forth between the two men. “So,” he starts hesitantly, “you’re looking for a way to cheer Jongdae up?” The man smiles at Luhan’s nod. “Why don’t you talk to him? See if there’s anything he wants to do that could get him out of work for a few days, he sounds like he needs it.”

Luhan gapes. “That’s actually a great idea.”

Sehun huffs. “Of course.”

--

They’re in an airport, taking up an entire row of cheap faux leather chairs in their designated gate area. Luhan chances a look at the anxious man next to him, thigh jiggling as he bounces his leg restlessly, and smiles.

He’d been worried at first, asking Jongdae if there was anything he could do to take his mind off the awful breakup, but then the conversation had evolved into Jongdae’s extensive plans for a non-existent wedding. After the man had quietly admitted that the honeymoon was going to be his favorite part, the plans he’d put the most thought into, Luhan had coaxed them out of him. The very next day, Luhan was on the phone, booking a room for a week at the five star hotel in Jeju, printing out plane tickets, and calling up Jongdae’s boss to beg for some leave.

Luhan hadn’t been able to wipe the smile off of his face when Jongdae stared at him in awe before rushing over, throwing his arms around Luhan’s thin neck and pushing his face into the older man’s sweater where he’d left wet marks from tears–happy tears, he’d promised–before gushing over the details of the trip, rushing back to his apartment to pack his bags.

For good measure, Jongdae had invited their friends along so that he wouldn’t be able to delude himself into believing that this would be something… more.

When Jongdae nudged him to stand because they were boarding, his hand drifted to his pocket where the blue velvet box rested–the one he’d dug out of the trash when Jongdae had shown up, looking absolutely wretched, at his front door.

And then he had to deal with the younger’s snarky laughter as he searched madly for his boarding pass, flight attendant watching him, unamused.

It is a short flight, but nice. Luhan sits beside Jongdae, whose attention is focused on whatever is outside their window for the entire flight.

With little trouble, they locate their bags and hop on the complimentary shuttle to the hotel. There’s no issue, and they don’t even lose Jongin in the mass of hurrying people. The only issue is at the front desk.

“Reservation under ‘Lu,’” he says, coupled with a polite smile as Jongdae bounces beside him in excitement.

“Ah,” the woman exclaims softly as she finds the name. “Welcome to our hotel. We hope you enjoy your stay. It looks like you have one deluxe suite and three standard rooms booked, is that correct?”

Luhan can hear his wallet crying in despair. “Yes, that is correct.”

“Excellent how many keys would you like per room?”

“Two for each of the standard rooms, and one for the deluxe,” Luhan requests.

Jongdae speaks before the woman has a chance to reply. “Only one for the suite?”

“Yes?” Luhan replies, equally as perplexed. “For you.”

“Where are you sleeping?”

Luhan spares an apologetic smile for the desk worker before he answers. “I was planning on sharing a room with Minseok.”

“And leaving me all alone?” Jongdae asks. He sounds heartbroken, eyes sad. Luhan opens his mouth, sighs, closes it, and turns to the woman.

“Two for the suite, please.”

--

Luhan doesn’t wake up first, but when he does, Jongdae’s staring at him. It’s almost magical for a moment, the two of them looking into each other’s eyes and Luhan swears he can see a glimmer of something there, but then Jongdae is throwing off the sheets and demanding breakfast.

The week passes quickly. Luhan and Jongdae attempt to hit all of the exotic locations on the list and their friends join them at first, but then slowly trickle off to explore town or stay in the hotel by the end of the week.

On the last day, when Luhan comes out of the shower–he hadn’t even had a chance to use the jets in the bath tub yet–he finds Jongdae out on the balcony.

“What are you thinking about?” He whispers, careful not to disturb the man as he leans on the railing beside him.

“I just realized,” Jongdae mumbles, slight wind tugging at his tousled hair and Luhan yearns to bury his fingers in it, tug lightly on the mess of dark brown strands as he licks into Jongdae’s mouth and the younger pants desperately, hands threaded through Luhan’s own hair as they–oh, Jongdae’s talking. The man turns and faces Luhan, lips curling up in a smile as he admits, “I hadn’t even thought about her today.” And then he leans in close and whispers right into Luhan’s ear, “Thank you.”

Luhan doesn’t sleep a wink that night.

--

At the insistence of his friends, who complained that Luhan and Jongdae deserted them in favor of spending a week wrapped up in each other, Luhan asks Jongdae out on a date.

To the blonde’s immense surprise, the answer is a yes.

One date turns into two, then three, then ten, and then they’re falling into Luhan’s queen-sized bed after hours spent at a bar, laughing in between desperate kissing and petting as they tear their clothes off and try not to get their limbs tangled in the sheets. And then laughter turns into loud moans as Luhan whispers fervent declarations of love into Jongdae’s jaw, his collarbone, his stomach, and then his thighs. When Luhan welcomes Jongdae’s weeping length into his mouth, it’s only a matter of time before Jongdae’s mouth opens in a silent scream and he comes hard down Luhan’s throat, immediately pulling the man up to seal their lips together in a hungry kiss.

That night is followed by many more, some that involve much more than Luhan sucking on the younger’s cock, and others that consist of just cuddling–legs tangled as they press their foreheads together and offer one another sleepy smiles after a long day of work.

And then, when Jongdae comes over for a movie and some pizza (with the silent promise of more), Luhan lowers himself onto one knee and pulls a velvet box from his pocket.

“Jongdae,” he starts slowly, staring at the man who has both hands over his mouth, eyes wide in shock. “I never even believed I’d be able to ask you this question–never thought to hope–but now I think that there might be a possibility for us to be together forever. And I’d want nothing more than that. So would you make me the happiest person alive and marry me?” He opens the box.

Jongdae sobs.

Luhan immediately stands, realizing his mistake. It’s the ring. He’s using the ring. “I’m so sorry,” he says immediately. “I didn’t–I thought that you’d have forgotten by now.” Obviously not, why had he even believed that for a second? “If the ring is problem, I could go out and buy another.”

Jongdae shakes his head, stepping forward and sliding the ring he’d bought over a year ago onto his finger. “It fits,” he marvels.

“I had it re-sized.”

“It’s perfect,” Jongdae whispers, throwing his arms around Luhan, holding him impossibly close. He can’t see the man’s face–his vision is too obscured by the unshed tears in his eyes, but he assumes it’s a happy one when he says, “And my answer is yes.”

--

Jongdae laughs when Luhan steps on his foot yet again. “I’m going to have bruises on my feet at this rate,” he mumbles as they continue to waltz in the center of the room, eyes of friends and family trained on them. “I thought you danced in high school.”

“I did,” Luhan hisses back, obviously miffed. His expression transforms into something more teasing not a second later, and Jongdae braces himself. “But it’s hard to concentrate on the footwork when all I can see is your beautiful face.”

Jongdae throws his head back and groans. “I suppose I’m going to have to deal with your absurdity a lot more now, hm?”

“Every single day,” Luhan sings cheerfully as the dance comes to an end and he leads Jongdae back to their chairs with an arm around his waist.

When they have some time in between speeches and cutting the cake, Luhan leans over and whispers, “What are you most excited about?”

Jongdae hides the full-body shiver at the low tone. This is not the place nor the time. “Honeymoon,” he whispers back.

“I’m sorry,” Luhan starts, “but I don’t think we’ll be able to go to all those places you had on your list. In fact, I don’t even think we’ll leave the room for the whole time we’re there.”

“Then what did you have in mind?”

Luhan grins lecherously and it looks extremely out of place on his soft features. “I thought we’d start in the bathtub and work our way up from there.”

“You are ridiculous,” Jongdae bemoans, rolling his eyes; however, he can’t quite keep the huge grin off his face.

“But you love it,” Luhan tries.

Jongdae doesn’t even bother with a reply, instead he stands and walks around to greet their guests, smile coming naturally.

When Luhan appears halfway through to comment on Jongdae’s suit, to tell him that it looks very nice, but that he’d look better out of it, Jongdae almost knocks him out. When he raises his hand, though, the diamonds on his ring catch in the light and Jongdae supposes that, just for today, Luhan can be as ridiculous as he wants.

After all, Jongdae loves him.
